I researched Valentine's Day on history.com and didn't have much luck as to its meaning. There are several different "stories or beliefs" as to what the day means. What I do know is that Americans probably started celebrating and exchanging hand-made cards in the early 1700s. In 1840 Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentine's in America. I was just curious as to how it came about. We always hear about St. Valentine, and that 'he' plays a big part in the holiday. The funny thing is, St. Valentine refers to many martyred saints of ancient Rome. So, it's not just one man after all!
To me, Valentine's day is more about young lovers in love. I think that once you get married, the big day is the day you said 'I do'. Many people do things for Valentine's Day to show their love for each other. I think it's just another day. You should want to show those you love and care about everyday or every chance you get how much they mean to you. Maybe for some people they need to be reminded to express how they feel for their loved ones. I guess some people don't express themselves very well, so maybe Valentine's day was created for them! :)
I don't really remember a "memorable" Valentine's Day. I do remember it meaning more when I was dating though. The day is so commercialized anymore, flowers, jewelry, cards, chocolates, etc. It seems like people aren't happy unless they get something. I have always been content not getting something for Valentine's Day. The only thing I saw on Facebook status' was how excited people were that they got X, Y and Z... OR how unhappy they were.
Don't get me wrong, I posted my status too. I'm not a big believer of the day, however, I was surprised by a hand delivered bundle of flowers from my wonderful husband. That usually doesn't happen. I think that's what shocked me the most. He hand delivered them himself..... I was so surprised to see him in the middle of the day! But, I would have been that way if it was the 3rd Thursday of the month too! :)
After work, we headed to Briley's basketball game then off to Monicals Pizza for dinner. Our younger Terror team was having a fundraiser. We had pizza and then endulged ourselves in a pantastic cookie for our Valentine's dessert!! Talk about heaven! It's a huge warm cookie in a pan with ice cream on top, it's just heavenly!!! My mom had Valentine's dinner with us, which was nice.
That's what our day consisted of. Nothing special, other than the cookie! I think people sometimes spend way too much money on the day and overdo it. But, I guess everyone has their tradition. As for ours, we don't really have one, and I'm sure it will always be that way.
As for this Valentine's Day, I was completely surprised and thrilled with my flowers, but even more so by the man who presented them to me in person. :)
I started this blog for random thoughts to share, vent, talk about things, blow off steam and just share about me in general. Some will be totally random and make no sense, but I will be able to get things off my chest and on paper, or in this case, screen.
